Yoga is a pretty tricky form of exercise. Yoga, for those of you who do not know, doesn’t involve cardio vascular exercises such as jogging or cycling or swimming. Yoga is a form of exercise that consists of several poses that centers on strengthening the body, physically and mentally.

These poses are physically tough and that is why beginner’s yoga is recommended for people who are starting their first yoga classes. The more often you do the poses, the more naturally your body will become accustomed to it, and when that time comes, you would be more comfortable in doing more challenging poses.

Modern scholars have defined yoga as the classical Indian science that concerns itself with the search for the soul and the union between the individual, whose existence is finite, and the Divine, which is infinite.

Today, yoga is known as one of the original concepts of holistic healing. Holistic healing means that the body is related to the breath; both are related to the brain; in turn this links with the mind, which is a part of consciousness. The central aspect of yoga concerns control- the control of the body, breath and mind. This might sound easy, but holding the physically challenging poses give true meaning to the word control. The secret of yoga practice lies in a simple but important word: balance. In every area of our life, yoga represents balanced moderation.

Some of the first few poses in beginners yoga is Downward Facing Dog - Adho Mukha Svanasana, Extended Side Angle Pose - Utthita Parsvakonasana, Garland Pose - Malasana, Pyramid Pose - Parsvottonasana, Mountain Pose - Tadasana, Raised Hands Pose - Urdhva Hastasana, Standing Forward Bend - Uttanasana, Standing Straddle Forward Bend - Prasarita Padottanasana, Triangle Pose - Trikonasana, Warrior I - Virabhadrasana I and Warrior II - Virabhadrasana II.

These are standing poses which are taught to the beginners to be practiced everyday. Beginner’s yoga also includes an array of seated poses and they are Cobbler's Pose - Baddha Konasana, Easy Pose – Sukasana, Half Lord of the Fishes Pose - Ardha Masyendrasana, Head to Knee Pose - Janu Sirsanana, Seated Forward Bend – Paschimottanasana, Seated Wide Legged Stradle - Upavistha Konasana and Staff Pose – Dandasana.

Apart from these poses, beginner’s yoga also focuses on resting, balancing and backend poses. For example, resting poses include the Child's Pose – Balasana, Corpse Pose – Savasana, Happy Baby Pose - Ananda Balasana and the Reclined Big Toe Pose - Supta Padangusthasana where as balancing poses are such as Plank Pose, Hands and Knees Balance, Side Plank Variations - Vasisthasana Variations and the ever famous Tree Pose – Vrksasana.

Yoga is a very good exercise for people who undergo high levels of stress and even those looking for emotional management in anger, sadness and those who are prone to go in and out of depression. Yoga has both preventive and therapeutic benefits to the body and the mind. This form of exercise is suitable for people of all ages to stay in shape but also develop balance, coordination, and a sense of centeredness. It renews, invigorates, and heals the body - stretching and toning the muscles, joints, and spine and directing blood flow.
