Google Health, a first look

It's been a busy week for the Google Health team. Last week we our partnership and pilot with the Cleveland Clinic. This week, the team has been at the(Healthcare I nformation and Management Systems Society) conference in Orlando, Florida, where Eric Schmidt gave the closing keynote. Eric's keynote marks the first time we've talked publicly about the product we've been designing and building. His talk also offered a deeper view into our overall health strategy.

Google Health aims to solve an urgent need that dovetails with our overall mission of organizing patient information and making it accessible and useful. Through our health offering, our users will be empowered to collect, store, and manage their own medical records online.

For the healthcare industry, online personal health records (PHRs) aren't a new idea and, in some cases, online PHRs already exist for patients. Here's what we think sets Google Health apart:

Google is not currently collecting all of a patient’s information. They act as a warehouse for providers that currently work with their system. There are thousands of providers that do not currently work with them and will not for quite some time. Think of all of the thousands of doctors that still use paper charts.
Our company MedeFile www.medefile.com provides this service for our members. We actually collect all of our members’ records, organize them and index them for each member. Not only do they have access to their records online in their secure MedeFile, but also a secure patent pending MedeDrive which is a USB device that contains not only emergency medical information but also the mirror of their actual records in their MedeFile.
MedeFile derives its revenue from subscription fees. not any advertising on our site. This technology and service exists today, not years down the road. I urge you to see what this movement is all about.
